About Us

As Penang is situated amidst the greatest Robusta coffee producing regions in the world, namely Sumatra and Vietnam, the local coffee is naturally primarily Robusta based.

The quality of Robusta beans does vary tremendously over the regions, and the best Robusta beans, feeding upon the enriched volcanic soil near the Krakatoa volcano, can be found in the Lamphong District of Sumatra. It is also the same area where Kopi Luwak (reputed to be the most expensive coffee in the world) originates.

Koon Kee famous white coffee was formulated to offer discerning coffee drinkers a taste profile that closely follow those found in best possible local coffee, while retaining the convenience and economy of an instant premixed beverage. It is made up of four main ingredients, namely instant coffee, castor sugar, non-dairy creamer, and natural flavour enhancers.

The instant coffee is extracted from medium to dark roasted Sumatra Lamphong 320 beans. The non-dairy creamer, extracted from palm oil, has a superior taste and health properties compared to the ubiquitous coconut based creamers. Miscellaneous natural ingredients were added to improve the aroma, flavour, body, and texture of the coffee.

It has been said that a coffee drinker can hardly visit Penang without having the chance to drink Koon Kee coffee.

Koon Kee coffee is indeed so dominant in Penang that everyday at least 200,000 cups of Koon Kee coffee are served all over the place throughout Penang. The coffee, in its various forms, is being served in outlets including the road-side mamak (indian muslim) stalls, coffee shops, bistros, and an assortment of 5 star establishments.

Koon Kee had a humble beginning in the 1950s. Over the years, it has grown to become the leading manufacturer of coffee and tea products in Penang. Its success is the result of the quality of its products, which are based on the best ingredients and on stringent control of the manufacturing process. The same traditional quality value has been strictly imposed on all its product ranges, which clearly distinguish themselves in quality from their competitors.

In the 1990s, Koon Kee coffee was affectionately known as the “Kopi Towkay” – the “Tycoons Coffee”. It was discovered by a reporter that the then richest man in Penang derived his business inspirations mostly from drinking Koon Kee coffee. The tycoon has since passed away, but the coffee shop in Hutton Lane, which the tycoon frequented almost every day, is still open today and continues to serve the same coffee in the same traditional manner as it has been for three generations.
